What Job is
Right For Me ?
What Job is
Right For Me?
As a recruiter I get asked this question on
many occasions, by people wanting to make either a slight career
adjustment, or those looking for a complete change of career direction.
This subject is dear to me, as I went through this same process about
13 years ago.
And to put it frankly I made a complete @#@&$# of it!
I don't mean that I hate where I am now or anything like that.
I simply mean that the process probably stretched over a 6 year period,
from first recognizing those internal pangs of dissatisfaction with my
job and career direction, to the point where I had made changes and
felt "clarity" and "confidence" in the career changes I had made.
If I had known then what I know now, I would have saved myself probably
5 years, a gut full of STRESS, maybe some hair follicles (not sure on
this one), and I don't dare think about the money...
The problem for me was, though I recognised I was unhappy with my
relatively successful corporate sales career, I knew I wanted to change
career, but did not know how.
My internal voice (conscious mind) also supplied a never ending list of
well reasoned arguments as to why I should not change and
take the RISK.
I needed a method to clarify my ideas, and enable me to build a
credible plan to at least subdue my conscious mind (I don't think you
ever get it completely "on-side", as it's job is to protect and
question).
However I had no such plan, so for me the internal battles continued (I
promise I'm not nuts) until...
I was so hacked off with my job, that I did not care what risks I maybe
taking...
I simply had to change.
This is NO way to build a smooth change of job, or career change.
Frying pan and fire, come to mind.
To wrap up my story; I was lucky my career choices were quite
good, the non-existing planning and lack of clarity meant I had to make
many changes of direction to finally feel on course, and get where I
wanted.
I would hate for you to have to go through the same process as me!
So what job
is right for me ?
The answers lie within YOU.
Don't worry I'm not going to go all psycho babble on you, simply
recommend a couple of free resources that I think you will find
extremely helpful (understatement!) in answering what job is right for me?
So what job
is right for me ? - Resource 1
Firstly I was going to
recommend a book written by Nick Williams who is fast becoming the UK's
leading career coach.
The book "The Work We Were Born to Do" first published in
1999, is one of my favorite always to hand resources.
I said "going to recommend" as Nick has just released a Free 9 part
email course. This is a distillation of the book with expert video
commentary from Nick.
It covers Nick's 12 principals for discovering the work you were born
to do.
And though it lends itself naturally to those considering an
entrepreneurial route, I believe it's of great value to everyone who
wants more from their career.
And is the method I needed 13 years ago!
The course "Discover The Work You Were Born To Do" will inspire your
creativity, and set the framework for gaining clarity and confidence.
Or put another way, be the catalyst for exposing your hidden ideas, and
turning them into a practical plans.
Simply follow the link, sign up (name, email and country) and get started.
If you like the course you can always buy the book later.
Sign up and start now!.

So what job
is right for me ? - Resource 2
The second resource I wanted to recommend, is taking the free MAPP Test
- Motivational Appraisal Test.
This test is 71 questions, taken on-line, will take about 20 - 40
minutes depending how deliberate you are. I have reviewed the test in some detail
on this other page.
The focus of my review is how taking this test will provide:
- Professional personality descriptions to use in
your CV / Resume
- Prepare you - this testing is becoming the norm
in corp interviewing
But...
It's primary function is to give you a fast and accurate review of the
things that motivate you at work, looking across the 9 key worker
traits:
- Job Content - tasks you want to perform
- Temperament - how you prefer to perform tasks
- Aptitude - how you like to express your
performance of tasks
- People - how
you relate to people
- Things - how
you relate to things, materials, processes etc
- Data - how
you relate to data and information in your work
- Reasoning - how you relate to reasoning and
decision making
- Math - how
you relate and apply the use of math
- Language Capacity - How you use language
This is vital information, as you consider why you may want to change
jobs.
One of the trouble areas is "adapted" behaviour. Meaning that most
people have to adapt their way of working to suit the job.
The problems begin when you have to adapt your natural behavior a LOT.
In extreme cases this causes great stress.
So this test can quickly point out how you may want to redirect your
job content to better suit your natural preferences.
For those of you looking for your first job, This test can give you an
excellent idea of the type of work you should consider, and that to be
wary of.
Take the MAPP test Now!
Nobody can tell you what job is right for you, but I believe using
these two excellent and free resources, will provide you sympathetic,
inspirational and entirely practical advice.
And guide you to answer what job is right for me ? yourself.
Good luck and please let me know how you get on.
