Use Bullet Points

by Steve
(Warrington, UK)

As an experienced (old) job seeker, I have a ton of what I think is great experience, that I have always included in my CV.

As a result my CV had reached over 5 pages!

Now I can't believe recruiters and HR managers have anything better to do than read about me (joking).

However I was advised by a friend who is a pro CV writer that I had to cut my CV down to a maximum of 3 pages.

And she showed me how to do it by using bullet points.

What she wanted me to do was to first of all translate my old style of describing my responsibilities (which are apparently really boring for the reader) into achievement statements (yes I know this is a second tip).

So as an example I changed

Responsible for process re-engineering the customer service department by mapping current processes identifying duplication and bottle-necks and designing new efficient processes (that doesn't sound dull does it?).

* used 6 sigma to re-engineer processes, reducing service call durations by 35%, and saving 3 FTE's.

Not only half the length, but far more achievement focused.

These 2 tips concentrated my CV into 3 pages, but most importantly made it far more punchy.
