CV / Resume Cover Letter - Why do I need one?

Firstly let’s consider the purpose of a CV / Resume Cover letter. Both your CV / Resume and cover letter are marketing documents, for the sole purpose of getting you an interview. No more no less!

They are written for the sole benefit of the reader (the Hiring Manager, HR manager, Recruiter), They have to convey in as few words possible, and as fast as possible why you are the right person for the job.

Concise, punchy, dynamic wording, plainly formatted, nothing fancy, the words do the selling.

But I’ve got a great CV / Resume why do I need a cover letter as well?

Well you don’t have to send a cover letter every time, if for example you are submitting to a Job Board you don’t need to include a cover letter.

I have seen cover letters included on job boards but because of the general nature of job boards, and all the different folks who may be looking at your CV, a cover letter will most probably MISS most readers, so don’t bother.

A lot of people don’t attach a cover letter when sendingtheir CV / Resume to a recruiter.

Now I am a recruiter, and I can assure you that I really do appreciate the effort you have made by typing a brief CV / Resume cover email (99% of CV / Resumes come to me via email), and even if the experience shown is not right for any of my clients, I feel obliged to help the sender in any way I can.

I won’t score you down if you don’t attach a cover note, but I will respond to the extra effort and courtesy extended to me, by replying in kind.

This response is not just me it’s human nature, and it’s worth using to your advantage.

Therefore if you are applying for a job through a recruiter or directly YOU IMPROVE your chances of getting an INTERVIEW by sending a CV / Resume cover letter.

How much?

Well I have read reports claiming 25% to even 50% improved performance by adding a cover letter.

I personally doubt the 50%, and would be surprised if it’s quite 25%, but the point is it considerably improves your chances.

So take advantage of this opportunity.
