Performance Based Interview Questions?
Performance based interview questions can also be known as:-
- Behavioral Interview Questions
- Competency Based Interview Questions
- Situational Based Interview Questions
They work on the premise that history repeats itself, or in the case of people, we all tend to be creatures of habit.
This type of questioning is fast becoming the most common form for job interviews, as the questions themselves tend to appear innocuous enough, leaving the job seeker with plenty of leeway to answer, or rope to tie oneself up with.
These questions often start along the lines of "tell me about a time you..."
And for the eager job seeker it's probably quite easy to simply tell the interviewer of that particular experience. But if unprepared this form of unstructured answer will almost certainly not score you the full points available, and worse still could undermine your while interview.
The devil lurks in these questions because they are so broad, and the question conceals the fact that the interviewer actually wants a specific, concise example from your past experience, quoting facts, your actions and outcomes, represented in tangible commercial language where possible.
Like everything else to do with acing interviews, answering performance based interview questions, is very easy if you have done your research on your target job, and understand your experience, and personality traits that are most relevant. And you have a strategy for structuring your answers.
The main thrust of this article is to discuss a brilliant technique for structuring these answers, if you feel you need help, structuring your research, follow this link to find out what ALL employers really want.
Right the technique I recommend for structuring your answers is the STAR METHOD:-
S – Situation, background set the scene
T – Task or Target, specifics of what's required, when, where, who
A – Action, what you did, skills used, behaviours, characteristics
R – Result – Outcome, what happened - In tangible commercial language
Above are the elements a great answer should contain. Note its a very logical order, nothing difficult to remember. The power is in the simplicity, and the logic.
The reason I have mentioned logic twice, is that all interviewers have to make a form of buying decision, when deciding to put your through to the next round or make you an offer.
Buying decisions are always based on both logic and emotional drivers, so structuring your answers in this format is very helpful for the interviewer.
The next part of the answer is to wrap these logical elements into an experience story, or STAR story, as I like to call them.
The reason we use stories again comes down to the human psyche, we are all conditioned to enjoy stories, so by packaging your factual STAR elements into a story format you make them more enjoyable, and CRITICALLY... MEMORABLE
And because we all tend to like stories, this style of delivery offers inbuilt likability. Likability is the missing EMOTIONAL element your interviewer needed.
In summary, a little practice, and research using the STAR story method to answer performance based interview questions, is one of the most powerful life skills.
Combine it with the right research, and it will be life changing.
