Job Application Covering Letter – As a rule a cover letter will be sent in response to some form of job advert, and be combined with your CV / resume, unless the application uses a form instead of your CV / resume.

However you can also send in a job application cover letter speculatively to a target company that you would like to work for.

The speculative cover letter is actually a very good job searching strategy to use, as it demonstrates initiative, desire and self motivation. And even if no positions exist most organisations will be impressed and put your CV / resume in the “contact when hiring” file.

Your job application cover letter gives you greater sales licence than your CV / resume, which by its very nature has to be slightly more formal and structured.

Now I’m not saying your cover letters can be informal and poorly structured, as this will most likely be your first contact with your target, you have to be respectful and courteous, but your CV application letter, does offer you the opportunity to sell yourself and inject a little more personality, and marketing muscle than a CV.

Both your CV / resume and your cover letter are vital marketing document on your behalf. Yes, cover letters often get stripped away from their accompanying CV resume, and therefore loose their value, but for the many times when they don’t, you will really stand out from the crowd.

One because many people these days do not bother to add a covering letter, and two because if it does get read by your target, it gives you a great opportunity to sell yourself for interview.

Covering letters really benefit from the direct marketing world, as your cover letter can borrow from all the proven marketing techniques that have been fine tuned over the last 100 years.
