Interview Rules

The following Interview Rules form a short summary of critical Job Interview Rules that followed will ensure your Interviewing success.

1. Research Thoroughly – Understands the company, products and services and how they are doing and the market conditions, and specifically the role you are interviewing for.Remember research and preparation build confidence.

2. Prepare everything you need for your interview at least 2 days in advance (gives you time to correct any problems). This covers, clothes, copies of documentation you may need (at least 2 clean copies of your CV / Resume), directions / map, money for parking / toll / unexpected, Detail of who you are meeting and their telephone number (in case of emergency).

3. Give yourself plenty of time to travel. Do not be late.

4. Get yourself into a positive frame of mind. Employers like positive, “can do” personalities. Avoid describing experience in negative downbeat terms. If something less good needs to be covered, explain how you learnt from the experience and are better for it.

5. Positive body language, smile, plenty of eye contact, firm handshake, don’t slouch when seated. Controlled enthusiasm (not like a puppy, and definitely not an excited puppy!).

6. Having researched and prepared properly, you will have interpreted the most important skills and personality traits that the company will be looking for, and have aligned these with your own experiences and skills. Turning them into specific examples that you can quote concisely and truthfully, quantifying achievement wherever possible.

7. Listen very carefully. Listening is a far too rarely used skill; demonstrate it. Take your time and ask questions if you are unsure of something.

8. Carry at least a professional looking note pad in a small document holder, you can take your briefcase if it's appropriate, but not to much luggage. Don’t take copious notes, but jot down important stuff, like the names of people you meet and may need later.

9. You’ve researched and prepared, are not deviating from the truth in your answers – Well done! Try and enjoy the interview, if you can it WILL show.

10. Ask Questions that you've previously prepared. At the end of the interview if you are keen on the role, reconfirm your skills and experience being a great fit with the company, confirm your desire to accept an offer or progress to the next stage, and ask if you have demonstrated all the skills they are looking for. If you are going for a sales role you had better really close this down (its what they would expect)

11. An extra Interview Rule! – – really important – stand out by sending a post interview thank you letter, and follow up with a phone call within 5 working days.

GOOD LUCK!
