I need help deciding what career to choose

I need help deciding what career to choose

Deciding what career path or what job path to take is a MASSIVE and uniquely personal decision
.
Some people just seem to “know” what career path to choose, while the rest of us tend to be stuck somewhere between…

Not a clue – complete mental fog with no lights to point the way out

Or

Don’t care – just need the money.

The unfortunate truth of the matter is that most people feel some level (possible understatement) of disappointment with their working lives.

Now I’m no psychologist so I am not going to start suggesting “deep” find the “real you” type of advice.

But I will say that without a clear mental picture of the job / career that you want, you will severely damage your chances of finding a job.

So whilst were asking the question, rather than just look for any old job let’s aim high and look for a job you going to “LOVE”.

I need help deciding what career to choose - So where do you start?

I think an excellent starting point is to take advantage of a free MAPP test, this is a 71 question online motivation appraisal.

This is quick (20 – 40 minutes), easy and free, and will give you a really good assessment of what work related activities motivate you. You may think you know this stuff, but I bet you’ll be surprised by some of the findings.

I have reviewed the MAPP test here

Or take the MAPP test now

The report also offers you career suggestions, but though I believe the information is of huge value, I would suggest it’s a great starting point for your own research rather than a finishing point.

Mapp test complete you should now have some ideas starting to come through, continue brainstorming to build a long list of possible careers.

I need help deciding what career to choose - Be creative

I read a really interesting article written by a political cartoonist, who had followed advice that had been given to him on the subject of career choice and how to think outside of the norm.

He had been told to combine 3 things that he thought he was good at (not the best, just better at than most people he knew – top 40%) interested in, and enjoyed.

He new he was good at art but not as good as he needed to make a living painting.

He also liked making people laugh – but did not have the confidence to become a comedian.

Having studied Politics at University, was interested in the subject, but could not see himself in a normal political career.

Anyway after trying many different combo’s he hit on political cartoonist!

Though he was not gifted in any one of the three areas, when he put them all together, he found a unique and compelling whole, that he felt confident he could develop successfully.

20 years later he wrote the article as one of the worlds top political cartoon satirists.

I wish I had kept the article, but I think it’s a great technique for coming up with unusual career options that will combine things that your quite good at enjoy and are interested in.

I need help deciding what career to choose - Other help

An excellent book full of practical exercises to help you unlock your dream job “How to Get A Job You’ll Love” by John Lees.

Not an "easy" read, this book demands your full attention, but will get results.

Available from Amazon with 23 reader reviews (scores 4.5 out of 5 stars) this book will really help you define the sort of work you’ll love.

Finally for those thinking that maybe they should consider working for themselves, a more entrepreneurial path, I would suggest another great free resource.

“Discover the Work You Were Born to Do” is by the best selling author and a rising star in career coaching Nick Williams. UK based Nick’s coarse is a distillation of his book “The Work We Were Born To Do”.

The course is 9 in parts and includes video commentary from Nick. A brilliant resource that opens the doors to what career coaching offers, but without any fees.

"Discover The Work You Were Born To Do" - Inspiring, thought provoking and possibly life- changing?

I need help deciding what career to choose - If your in a real fog!

Totally stuck – seek professional advice from a qualified career counselor. This is a very personal choice, you really have to trust and “connect” with whomever you choose.

I would suggest searching on your browser under “career counseling” or “vocational counseling” or “employment counseling” with your location.

The following UK and US resources will also help you find a counselor.

The Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches
An American resource with directory of certified career coaches

The British Psychological Society
Member search page.

All counselors should provide a free personal assessment to ensure that you  have the required "connection" to work well together.

I hope the information is helpful, and wish you well with your journey.
