How To Write A
Career Change Resume
How to write a career change resume / CV is about giving you the
writing basics (Font, size and style), and the advanced copy writing
techniques, required to win you the interview.
How To Write A
Career Change Resume - Principals
- A resume or CV is a marketing document, selling
YOU.
- It's written for a specific reader.
- The reader is faced with a buying decision (to
invite you for interview).
- To be "bought" you have to appeal to
your readers emotional and logical needs.
When considering how to write a career change resume or CV I believe it helps to
think of it in another way. It's a very similar process to writing an
advert, this time the product or service your selling is YOU.
What you are doing is writing copy.
Meaning grab the readers attention, hold their
interest, use their emotions to create desire for you the product.
Strong enough desire to invite you in for interview.
You can assume the following about your target reader
- Whether
they be HR, or CEO or Recruiter they need somebody to fulfill work /
business tasks. And have a logical list of requirements or skills
associated with the successful completion of those tasks.
- They
also want to work with somebody who is trustworthy, reliable, and able
to fit in with the team. An emotional need I call likability.
Therefore
for your CV / Resume to succeed it must meet BOTH the readers logical (skills,
experience, potential) and emotional (likable) needs.
When
changing careers significantly meeting the logical need becomes much
harder, as your career experience won't be an exact fit.
Therefore you do need to do your prep work carefully.
Research the job advert / description or the target industry / company very carefully you must know
what your reader wants and needs
Conveying likability in CV / resume writing is about including honest,
and "role" relevant personality traits. If you struggle with personal
descriptions take the free MAPP Test it will give you loads of great written ammunition
How To Write A
Career Change Resume - Font & Size
A
great CV / Resume is simple in format, with no graphics, clear font
(Arial or Times New Roman for example) font size 12 - 14 for Headings,
Body Copy two sizes smaller than your headings (10 -12).
Be consistent in how you set up headings and sub headings.
I prefer Section Headings in Capital Letters size 12 Aligned consistently either centre or left (personal choice)
Don't go crazy on underlining or bolding words, I personally would hardly ever use either.
How To Write A
Career Change Resume - Style
- Your writing must be concise
- Whole document 1 - 3 pages max
- Must write in 3rd person (take all 'I's out)
Usinging
bullet points is an excellent way of cutting bulk out of your CV /
resume, and it introduces white space in your document, which is proven
to be very pleasing to the eye.
Use "power
verbs" one of these words can often replace 3 or 4
in a sentence, making for a fast, punchy delivery.
Use the STAR
Method to ensure your work descriptions include achievements.
STAR standing for Specific, Target, Action, Results.
Last but by no means least
You must use a career change resume objective statement And may combine it with a career change resume skills summary
