How to prepare a Resume to Work in Finland


This is a short guide to help you. How to prepare a resume to work in Finland.


The key focus of your Finland Resume should be to persuade the employer to invite you for an interview. Therefore, your Finland Resume is a marketing tool, which should be adapted to the market in which you intend to use it.

Never send your Finland Resume without a covering letter.

Your Finland Resume should be written in reversed chronological order (i.e., most recent first). 

Mention your education, practical experiences, current job, special skills and language knowledge.

The Finns attach more importance to interpersonal relations and this is reflected during the interview.

In Finland the most important skills are Social skills, communication skills and teamwork abilities are the skills most in demand.

Fitting into the team is far more important than your technical competencies. Your interview will more about your personality.

Work permits in Finland

• EEA citizens are free to move and work wherever they want to, within the EEA (including Denmark).
• You need to apply for a residence permit, which is valid for five years and should be issued within six months of your
arrival.
• Contact the Finnish embassy in your home country for more information.

The application procedure in Finland

• Usually two or three interviews are held.
• Social skills, communication skills and teamwork abilities are the most important skills for Finnish recruiters.
• The application procedure differs between the public and the private sector in Finland.

The application letter in Finland

• It is common to send a typed application letter.
• The letter should reveal what kind of person you are and the reason why you want to work in this particular company.
• Attach a photograph only when specifically asked to.

• Prepare yourself. Find out information about the company you want to work for.
• Phone the personnel manager of the company in advance, to introduce yourself.
• Look interested – ask questions.
• Provide examples to illustrate your achievements.
• Ask for clarification if you don’t understand the question you have been asked.

• Sit until invited to in an interview.
• Be late for your interview.
• Interrupt the interviewer.
• Criticise former employers.
• Go over the top – stay calm and stick to the facts.

Management culture in Finland

• The young management generation is democratic and follows a participating style of
leadership.
• Finns are known to be poor at small talk and usually start meetings straight away.
• Finns prefer a strictly business conversation and they are considered tough negotiators.
• Silence is seen as an integral part of social interaction, and subsequently, pauses in
conversations are seen as friendly and appropriate.
• Business cards are exchanged frequently and should contain your academic and job titles.
