How do I Research Careers Options

How do I research Careers Options?

Researching for a new career is a sizable undertaking.

A how long is a piece of string? question

This is a much broader question than how to research for a specific industry or job.

So where do you start?

Well, you have to do some self analysis at this point to start to narrow down what you like and may want to consider in greater detail.

This really is broad, do you want to work inside, outside, with people, with machines, manual, academic, high pressure, low pressure…

I have reviewed some useful resource to help you inspire and organise your thoughts.

Having done your self analysis, you can start listing possible career options, as many as you feel you can handle, don’t stifle your creativity, you don’t have to fit into a career box.

Next you are going to select maybe 5 of your favorite ideas (try and include at least one whacky one), for some detailed interrogation.

I would split research into online and offline, with most of your work being done online.

However offline gives you the chance to see if there are people known to you, or your friends and family, or even wider; that work in, or close to the field your interested in.

If so, talk to them – your not asking for a job, flatter them by asking for help from their experience, people like talking about themselves.

Maybe volunteer to help free of charge to see what actually happens.

Visit job fairs or exhibitions concerning your chosen field.

Your only limited by your imagination

How do I research Careers Options? - Online

Next online – This is the mother load

The problem with the Internet is that there is TOO MUCH information!.

You have access to:

  • Specific Company Information
  • Industry associations
  • Country and Regional Information
  • Reviews of companies and industries by people already there

I typed in Google “what’s it like to be a tree surgeon in Alaska” and got 253,000 hits!

Ask Google whatever comes into your head you’ll be amazed what’s out there.

As you start to narrow your search you can join user group /community forums.

Join and courteously ask for assistance as you are considering a career move into their industry, people will be delighted to help you, I promise.

As you continue to narrow down your search, you can start looking at finding jobs.

If you still have your whacky selection in the mix, which may require some entrepreneurial skills, and no shortage of courage to take the step.

Try the free course by best selling author Nick Williams “Discover The Work You Were Born To Do”

This will inspire ideas, build confidence, and show you how you may make your dreams reality?
