Resume Objective
When
looking to make a major career change, your objective statement becomes
even more important.
As
it has to:-
- give
the reader what they are looking for.
- convey
your transferable skills to compensate for any lack
of specific experience.
- tell
them what you want (the job title ususally).
or put another
way...
It
has to persuade the reader that your generic transitional /
transferable skills and personality ARE relevant to the role they are
offering.
People
often forget the many great transferable skills they have, and its
these skills we need focus on.
For
example being a good comunicator or manager of people, are skills that
are valuable in any sector, though don't loose focus on what the reader
wants (don't mention manager of people if your target role doesn't need
it).
Your
CV / resume objective statement should
only be used if applying for a very specific role where you know your
objective is going to align with that of the reader. In this instance
an objective statement is supremely powerful.
If intent on changing career you have to be crystal clear on the role
you are after (if there are more than one - tailor each objective
accordingly).
The
reader has to believe you have the skills and commitment to transition
to the new career.
Your resume
objective
statement should be
concise and no more than 4 lines, It's a short powerful statement that
tells the reader that you offer what THEY want!
Career
Change Resume Objective - optional content
- The
exact job
title
used on the advert /
description – be as specific as possible.
- Function
of the
role. Include the
business
objectives of your target role
- Critical skills required (these
are the transferable skills mentioned earlier)
- Relevant
experience in tangible terms
(x years, x number of projects etc)
- Personal
behaviour
traits
appropriate to the role. This adds your unique personality.
Note: Mix the above ingedients, edit, polish
and edit some more, and you will get your Objective.
Career
Change Resume Objective - examples
"Highly enthusiastic, achievement oriented
consultant looking to leverage experience in
presentation, training, and problem solving in
an entry level teaching position".
"Experienced
business professional with highly developed training, and
presentation skills following passion to develop successful new
teaching career in progressive secondary school environment."
"Assitant
Marketing position that utilises writing, communications, and
creative skills, to make a positive contribution to the organisation".
If your prefer a short career change objective statement like the last
one above, that
leaves out some relevant skills or achievements, in favour of a
punchier "headline" look.
Ensure you follow it up with a career
change resume skills summary or achievements summary.
So you can hammer home the skills or achievements that would not fit in
your objective statement.
